Between kitchen appliances, your ovens, microwaves and refrigerators, heaters, air conditioners, and electronics, there’s a lot to maintain in a household. But there’s one appliance we often forget about entirely: our garage door.
The garage door opener isn’t something you have to think about often. Usually, they last a long time and rarely malfunction. But when they do, it can be a real pain. When you’re trying to rush the kids out the door to take them to school or make an important appointment, dealing with a garage door that won’t close behind you is the last thing you want to do. On top of that, replacing your garage door entirely tends to be a bit more of an ordeal than replacing your washing machine.

First, find out who built and installed your garage door and give them a call to figure out the details of your warranty. They may send someone out to repair it free of cost.
If your warranty is expired or invalid for some other reason, it may still be worth having them send out a repair person to take a look at your garage door opener. However, before doing so, take a look at the following to spot minor problems that have quick and easy fixes:
- Check the garage door sensor. Most modern garage doors have sensors, and if anything is in the way, they won’t close. Even if nothing is in the way, the sensor itself might just be malfunctioning due to some dust or debris caught on it. Take a look at the laser, wipe it off, and try again.
- Check your garage door remote. It may simply be out of batteries! The easiest way to do this is to go back inside and try opening and closing the garage door with the button on your wall. If it works, your remote is the source of the problem.
- Check the garage door tracks. Make sure they are aligned with the door itself and that all of the screws are tightly in place.
- Check the garage door opener. It may be malfunctioning simply because it is dirty. Clean it with a wet rag and some basic cleaning solution.
- Check the moving parts on the garage door opener. They may be loose, or they may just need to be lubricated. Put some oil on them and make sure all the screws are tightly in place.
